The Great State Dessert Debate

When KMOX Radio talk show host, Charlie Brennan, learned that 19 Missouri students were having legislation introduced this year to designate the ice cream cone as the official state dessert, he challenged them to a live, on-air debate. Student, Elise Kostial, represented the group and made their case to KMOX listeners through out the St. Louis area.

Both sides presented strong arguments regarding the historical significance of each of their respective desserts to the great state of Missouri. However, Elise was quick to point out that the ice cream cone went on to be world renowned, whereas the gooey butter cake is relatively unknown outside the St. Louis metropolitan area.

Listeners were invited to call in and cast their votes. By the end of the show, the ice cream cone prevailed. After the show, Elise Kostial presented Mr. Brennan with a quart of Gooey Butter Cake Ice Cream from Serendipity Ice Cream Shop in Webster Groves as a peace offering. Mr. Brennan in turn offered to try to help the students establish a monument or historical marker commemorating the ice cream cone, should their bill be enacted into law.
